What Causes Acid Rain?

Even without air pollution, the carbon monoxide occuring naturally in the air makes rain slightly acidic. But in recent years, air pollution has increased the acidity of rain and snow to the point where precipitation has turned into a deadly threat to

numerous organisms ranging from fish to forests.

When cars and factories burn fossil fuels, they release into the atmosphere pollutants such as sulphur and nitrogen oxides, halogen compound and a variety of hydrocarbons. These pollutants react with the moisture in the air to form highly acidic substances such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. Raindrops and snowflakes then deliver these acids to rivers, lakes and forests, making the soil and water inhospitable to life.
